Running for Cancer Research

My Story

In October 2012, I was all set to run the Great Eastern Run with some friends. My wife, Kate, was going to come along to cheer us on. Instead, when it came to race day, I was sat at her hospital bedside with our 3 year old twins, Isaac and Oscar. She was recovering from emergency surgery on what turned out to be stage IV colon cancer. The morning before Kate went into A&E with stomach pain; in the space of twelve hours it went from 'She's only 34, it's probably nothing' to 'it's serious' to 'it's cancer'. Kate has since been through two surgeries and two rounds of chemotherapy. As the treatment started, we learnt something surprising - that the combination of drugs and the surgical techniques didn't exist 10 years ago. Supporting our scientists and their research is what it makes these life saving treatments possible. I'm planning on doing the run again this year, this time, to help raise money for a very specific Cancer Research UK programme to "Support life-saving research into the causes of bowel cancer". Researchers for this project are investigating the molecular changes that cause bowel cancer. This will help doctors to understand how bowel cancer develops and will eventually lead to new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease. This research could make a great impact, so any contribution you can make, large or small will make a difference. PS A lot of you will know about Kate's work at the Africa Governance Initiative (AGI) - future fund raising will be for causes in Africa very close to her heart

CAUSE

Bowel cancer

Over the past 40 years there's been dramatic progress in tackling bowel cancer and half of people diagnosed will now survive for at least 10 years. But with bowel cancer still claiming around 43 lives each day, more research still needs to be done. Help Cancer Research UK find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease.
