Rare phyllodes tumours

My Story

I want to raise awareness about rare phyllodes cancer tumours as it's rare and not a lot of people are aware of them as they are often mistaken to be a benign fibroadenoma tumour. I was told I have a big fibroadenoma in my left breast and small ones in my right and that it was nothing to worry about as I am still young but because the tumour in my left breast was 5/6 cm big it was a bit of a worry therefore I had to have a core biopsy done. When I got my result it still came out as a fibroadenoma but doctors discussed my case in an mdt meeting and suggested that I have it removed as it's big and will affect me later on in life. After it was removed, they tumour was sent to the lab to test for cancer and I was called back to the breast clinic for my results and that's when I was told it isn't a fibroadenoma but a rare phyllodes tumour. I was told that i had to have a lumpectomy ( removing all the breast tissues that was around that tumour) to reduce the risk of it coming back and also to make sure I have a clear margin of breast tissues. After finding all this out; I was worried about my other tumour in my right breast as I got told they are fibroadenomas aswell so I asked for them to be removed aswell during my lumpectomy operation and I got my results today and I was right, turns out the tumours in my right breast are also phyllodes tumours. Being diagnose with phyllodes tumour at age 18 is very scary and rare as the tumour itself is rare therefore I wanted to raise more awareness for it because not a lot of people expecially young women my age knows about it and it worries me that they could be thinking they have a fibroadenoma but really it could be a phyllodes. There is hardly any research done on this type of cancer tumour therefore I want to raise money for rare cancers research and it would mean a lot if you could donate some money. Thank you

Rare cancers are varied and can be very different from each other, but they also have one important thing in common - it can be a real challenge for researchers to find enough patients to take part in clinical trials testing new treatments. Help Cancer Research UK boost research into rare cancers.
