My Story

Thank you for considering my assistance worthwhile of a monetary gift or tip! However, I have a different request. Instead of giving the money to me or any of the other (very) worthy causes out there, I wish you'd donate to Cancer Research UK's basic research. My mother died in 30th of June, 2011. She was a lovely person, and there isn't a day when I don't remember her. Her death after six months from the diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma (Cancer of the bile duct) left a void in my life I decided later on to fill out volunteering for freenode staffdom, as a way of thanking the community and tools that enabled me to discuss with close friends before and especially during and after her illness. Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare cancer. In UK only about 2000 people per annum (of the 64 million people of UK) are diagnosed with it. Of those diagnosed, depending on how early the cancer is diagnosed, up to 50% will survive 5 years from the diagnosis. Sadly, only a small portion of these 2000 are diagnosed early enough for the doctors to be able to surgically remove the cancer - of those to whom surgery isn't a possibility ONLY 2% survive 5 years. Thank you for your thoughts and kindness.

CAUSE

Preventing cancer

Professor Tim Bishop is using the latest DNA technology to hunt out the genes involved in cancer. This could enable doctors to identify who is at greatest risk of developing this disease, driving personalised cancer prevention advice and more targeted treatments.
