Kilimanjaro - July 2013

My Story

What am I doing? Monday 15th July 2013, all going well I will be at the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 5,895m (19,341 feet) above sea level. Due to the high elevation, low temperature, and occasional high winds, this is a challenging trek. There is no guarantee that my body will be able to deal with the affects the altitude will have, however, I am determined to summit and will do everything in my power to ensure I achieve the target. I will be climbing the Machame Route – considered to be slightly more challenging but also more scenic. I will travel through dense rainforest with muddy paths and temperatures of approximately 27 degrees Celsius, through moorlands and barren alpine desert environments, rocky areas and also the snow covered peak with temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius at night. More information on the route can be found at: http://www.ultimatekilimanjaro.com/machame_route.htm Why am I doing this Trek? Many of us has been touched by that scary word 'Cancer'. There are more than 200 types of cancer, each with different causes, symptoms and treatments with around 325,000 people having been diagnosed with cancer in 2010 in the UK, that's around 890 people every day. Basic cancer reserach has imporved our understanding of the disease and has resulted in cancer survival rates in the UK having doubled in the last 40 years. Any donation no matter how small will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance Narrinder

CAUSE

Basic research

Nine out of ten cancer deaths are caused by cancer cells spreading around the body in a process called metastasis. Dr Erik Sahai is leading pioneering research to understand metastasis and stop rogue cancer cells breaking free. This could provide new ways of preventing cancer spread, saving thousands of lives.
