Kate Guthrie

My Story

Kate Guthrie was just 16 months old when she was diagnosed with a rhabdomyosarcoma. She underwent two major surgeries, massive amounts of chemo and radiotherapy but at no stage did she lose her beautiful smile and the ability to make people laugh. Since Kate's death in 1994, her family have worked alongside CR-UK in trying to find out why sarcomas occur. Over the past four years her family and friends have raised £209k to fund five research projects in Kate's memory. This latest project will allow Dr Karim Malik at the University of Bristol to look at the key molecules which play a significant role in the development and progression of neuroblastoma (a cancer that starts from specialised cells involved in the development of the nervous system and other tissues). Dr Malik believes that these molecules could also be important in other children and young people's cancers including brain tumours (medulloblastoma and glioblastoma), Wilms tumour (a kidney cancer) and rhabdomyosarcoma (a cancer of the soft tissues including fat, muscle and tendons). This research will cost £40,000. We aim to raise this money by the end of 2016 to allow Dr Milak to start his research. Please help us to ensure that one day no lives will be lost to sarcoma. Thank you. x

CAUSE

Developing better treatments for children's and teenage cancers

More than 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK. Dr Karim Malik from the University of Bristol is investigating molecular changes that occur in a range of children’s cancers. His insights can lead to the development of new and better drugs for young people with cancer.
