Kate Guthrie

My Story

Kate Guthrie was just 16 months old when she was diagnosed with a rhabdomyosarcoma. She underwent two major surgeries, massive amounts of chemo and radiotherapy but at no stage did she lose her beautiful smile and the ability to make people laugh. Since Kate's death in 1994, her family have worked alongside CR-UK in trying to find out why sarcomas occur. During 2012, we raised £49,000 in Kate's memory, to fund a two year research project into sarcoma conducted at UCL and the Royal Marsden; 2013 saw a further £60,000 raised to look at the manner in which the disease is treated and in 2014 £50,000 allowed Dr Helen Hatcher in Cambridge to run a trial comparing different treatments for ULMS (uterine leiomyosarcoma). These three projects are now fully funded but there is still much more to be done. We aim to raise £30,000 in 2015 which will allow Professor Keith Wheatley at the University of Birmingham to compare VIDE with VDC/IE to find out which drug is the better treatment to use before surgery for Ewing's sarcoma. Please help us to ensure that one day no lives will be lost to sarcoma. Thank you. x

More effective treatment for Ewing's sarcoma

Ewing's sarcoma is a type of bone cancer that is most common in teenagers. Professor Keith Wheatley is looking at which combination of chemotherapy, before and after surgery, is best to treat this disease. This work will help us accelerate our progress to beat this cancer sooner.
