For my dad

My Story

In 2011 my dad was diagnosed with B-cell Non Hodgkin's lymphoma aggressive. After 6 months of chemotherapy we were blessed to find out that he had the all clear. Sadly in 2014 we were told that the cancer had come back. A new and different treatment started, which was much more intense. He powered through the weekly treatment, leaving him with a rather flattering island of hair missing from the top of his head. We were all feeling positive about the effectiveness of the treatment, by the looks of things he was looking better by the day. Finally the chemo was finished and we eagerly awaited the results of the final scan. The cancer had not gone. The few little specks of white amongst his body seemed so insignificant yet so powerful. A new type of chemotherapy for lymphoma was now being used. It was harsher still than the previous treatments but he was determined. 6 months on whilst i was at university i got 'the call' i had been dreading. Being told that things had taken a turn for the worse. Me my brothers (I'm a triplet - yes there are three of us), mum and my dad's close family sat by his bedside, watching him loose the ability to walk, talk and even open his eyes. What must have been painful few months ended peacefully. The doctors and nurses were all amazing and made sure that he was comfortable and being properly looked after. I couldn't have asked more from any of them. I would like to give a special thanks to John De Vos his consultant, all his team and Samantha Darby who was so considerate and comforting. I was alone whilst i watched him take his last breaths - this is something i wish no one has to experiance. So I hope that with the help of whatever money I am able to raise that the search for a cure continues and people with Lymphoma, that have just been diagnosed and that are yet to get it can have a bright and happy future.

CAUSE

Non Hodgkin's lymphoma

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the sixth most common cancer in the UK. Professor Andrew Pettitt’s pioneering clinical trial is looking to discover whether a new combination of drugs could be effective in treating older people with the disease, providing a treatment with fewer side effects.
