My uncle, my idol.

My Story

My first ever fishing trip was with my uncle Ryan. I always wanted to be like him, wanted the same clothes, same haircut, everything and now he was going to teach me to fish with him. He bought me a rod, reel and some tackle. I was only 10 years old and really didn't have a clue about carp fishing, but uncle Ry decided to take me along with him and all his friends to Tillington court farm. I stayed at his the night before and slept on the sofa, with the smell of cooked hemp and egg sandwiches throughout the house I was really getting excited, I don't think I slept for more than an hour. Then at around 4:30 in the morning i felt a nudge on the shoulder, it was my uncle. Come on he said we're gonna miss the best part of the day for catching carp if we don't leave soon. I remember most of the journey, i was squashed in the back of the car with all the tackle but this didn't bother me as I was with the person I always wanted to be like. When we finally arrived, we gathered all out kit together and walked through the morning mist to the pond. Him and all his friends were laughing and joking and they got me to join in on the banter. I felt like one of them. They all chipped in and helped me set my rod up and before I knew it my float was cast out into the pond. Then suddenly my uncle shouted at me 'Strike, strike' not having a clue what he meant, i done nothing and the bite had stopped. I sat all day watching my uncle catch fish and me still not having one single bite. Needless to say i blanked that day. But there were many trips to follow, with good numbers of fish. We stopped fishing together when i was around 18. I was doing the whole cars and girl's thing and fishing got forgotten about. We both decided to sell all our tackle as we thought we would never go again. Fast forward to September 12th 2012. We were hit with the most devastating news imaginable, Ryan has Oesophageal Cancer. Only just turning 38 this was heart breaking to our whole family and all of Ryan's friends. Then a few months later he found out he also had cancer of the liver and lungs. Winter past by and we were learning to cope, but still coming to terms with it all as the doctors said it was terminal and gave him roughly 12 - 18 months. Wanting to make the most of that time he decided to start fishing again and this time it would just be us two. We both got excited at the thought of being back on the bank again and started talking about old times. Within a few days we were on our way to Hartfield to pick up a carp setup he had bought off eBay. I could see the excitement in him as we loaded it all into the car. On the journey home we started to arrange a trip and talked all things carp. First session back went well, with both of us having personal best fish. We ended up going fishing every Saturday, but as the months went on i noticed Ryan changing. We went from non stop laughing and stuffing our faces with food to barely talking and he wouldn't eat a crumb. After a few more weeks, a day's fishing seemed like a struggle for him and that's when i realised i was losing my best friend. We never really spoke about it. It's as if we both knew what the other was feeling. And being the way we are around each other everything would be made into a joke. He was back an forth the hospital nearly 7 days a week and to tired out for fishing, which i totally understood. So made the decision one weekend to take on of my friends with me and this was when it hit me hard that it would never be the same without him. Back three months ago he had his oesophagus removed and thankfully is now on the mend. After thinking we would never get the chance to fish together ever again we're planning a trip for the summer. So please help me raise money to help fund clinical trials to help find a more effective treatment as im lucky to still have my fishing buddy because of the work researchers are doing. Others might not be so lucky.
