What is Esophagus/Oesophagus cancer?

Cancer of the esophagus develops as a result of cell changes in the lining of the esophagus.

There are two main types of cancer of the esophagus: squamous carcinoma, which is more common at the upper end of the gullet, and adenocarcinoma, which is more common at the lower end, particularly around the junction between the gullet and the stomach. Esophagus cancer is a very painful a and it causes pain when people swallow foods and drink.

Each year, almost 8,000 people are diagnosed with the disease in the UK alone - that's around 150 people each week. 

The reason I'm doing this

My grandad was diagnosed with esophagus cancer in 2009 and had an operation which worked to removed the cancer first time round,  but then after a while the cancer came back in 2010 and we discovered that the cancer is now terminal and he cannot undergo surgery again as it would be too dangerous.
