Emma Treks the Great Wall
In April I will be spending 5 days trekking parts of the Great Wall of China to raise money for the International Rare Cancers Initiative (IRCI). Unlike some charity challenges, I am funding the entire trek myself, meaning every penny I raise goes straight to Cancer Research UK. Sadly in August my Dad passed away having suffered an ocular melanoma. This is a rare and agressive form of cancer which meant within weeks he was gone. One fifth of cancers are classed as 'rare' making them more widespread than any single common cancer. Despite this, little funding goes into researching rare cancers meaning few treatments are available. The IRCI is hoping to raise £20,000 to improve the treatment for patients with rare cancers, including supporting new clinical trials and helping to bring these much needed treatments to patients more quickly. Thanks to everyone's generosity, we have already raised over £1,300 for the charity, but it isn't enough. £20,000 isn't very much if you consider the scale of Cancer Research UK, but the IRCI are still nowhere near their target. So please, give generously and help me support this worthwhile cause.

Rare cancers are varied and can be very different from each other, but they also have one important thing in common - it can be a real challenge for researchers to find enough patients to take part in clinical trials testing new treatments. Help Cancer Research UK boost research into rare cancers.
