A Big Challenge for a BIG Difference

My Story

In July 2011 I began cycling across Europe, from North Cape in Norway to Sagres in Portugal; over 6000Km Unfortunately I was injured after 1600 Km when I had got to Stockholm so had to terminate the trip there and then, vowing to come back and complete it at some point... This summer I will knock a huge chunk out of the trip over a 3 week period, cycling from STOCKHOLM to VALENCIA – over 3500Km. I will travel through Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France and Spain. I'll be cycling with all that I need on the back of my bike, and will be joined for the second half of the trip my my friend Andrew from my cycling club. I am cycling in aid of a special research project funded by Cancer Research UK. Like many people cancer has affected my life and I was brought to be aware of the devastation it causes at a young age. When I was eleven my best friend Theo died of cancer, he fought it for a long time but ultimately it got the better of him, if he could have harnessed his immune system things could have been very different. In 2010 my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer but thankfully over the course of a few months she overcame it, I have no doubt that this was down to the huge amount of research and development that has gone in to the curing and preventing of cancer. Another dear friend of mine is still battling the effects that cancer had on her immune system, she has been through a long and arduous fight which is still affecting her which is why I have chosen to support Dr Caetano Reis e Sousa's research. I have also completed a Tough Guy event in aid of the same course with the funds raised going in to the same project!

CAUSE

Dr Caetano Reis e Sousa

Our immune system is amazingly efficient at recognising and attacking infections, but isn’t as good at killing cancer cells. Dr Caetano Reis e Sousa is studying the immune system to learn how we can stimulate it to attack cancer cells, which could lead to new, more effective treatments for cancer patients.
